Notes on Genesis 30-31

Of the twelve tribes of Israel, I have barely heard any discussion of Dan. However, the tribe of Dan may be the most interesting and important save for Judah.

When the tribes of Israel are mentioned in Revelation 7, the tribes of Dan and Ephraim are not. Ephraim was blotted out because of their penchant for idol worship, but the speculation is that Dan’s name is missing because his is the tribe of the Antichrist.

Dan (the man) was born by Rachel’s handmaid, Bilhah. Rachel then makes almost the same declaration as Eve did when Cain (a type of Antichrist) was born. They both exclaimed that they were “given” a son by God.

Dan is called a serpent (Genesis 49:16) like Satan, and the same verse once again references the “heel” (Gen 3:15, once again). He is also called a “lion’s whelp” (Deut. 33:22) which correlates with Christ being the “Lion of Judah” (Rev. 5:5).

Dan is one of the northernmost tribes (Num. 2:22), evil will come from the North (Jer. 1:13-14), Gog from the land of Magog comes from the North (Ezekiel 38:2, 14-15), Antichrist is King of the North.

When Joseph brought his father, Israel, an “evil report (Gen. 37: 1-3)” the culprits included Dan (who would have been the oldest, and probably the ringleader), leading to Israel blessing Joseph (a type of Christ) who would be betrayed by his brothers (again, most likely Dan leading the charge).
So the tribe of Dan (whether ringleader or not) hated Joseph (Christ) and betrayed him.

Therefore, Dan (the man) is a type of Antichrist, just like Cain, Nimrod (Babylon), Esau (Rome), and Judas Iscariot (who most likely was/is/will be Antichrist).
