“And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.”
Genesis 18:32
This passage fascinates me because
- It appears we can negotiate with God, as Abraham negotiated from finding 50 down to 10 righteous to save Sodom.
- God is willing to give us hope of saving the lost, even when there are not many left to save.
- God gave Abraham the chance to rescue Lot and his family, though the end was inevitable. He does the same for us.
- God’s will (in this case, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah) will be done, though there is some sovereignty on our behalf. We can lead souls to Christ, but this world will come to an end.
I believe God is holding back His judgment because there are still Christians willing to negotiate on behalf of the unsaved. When that number gets too small, and it is constantly shrinking, the end will come.
I pray I’ve done enough.
