Acts 17:23 “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.”
The Greeks and Romans were polytheists – as were many ancient cultures. However, they still had room for a “god” that they did not know.
Human beings have an innate desire to worship. Some call it “the universe,” others “mother nature,” others worship politics, sports, or science. There are hundreds of more traditional religions from Taoism, Islam, and Hinduism to Judaeo-Christianity.
All humans, regardless of their upbringing, worship.
We Christians know that God is the creator of all things. He put this “hole” in our heart so that He could eventually fill it with the Holy Ghost. The reason so many people feel empty these days is because fewer and fewer worship the “unknown God,” the True God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – THE God.
I pray that I do better to convince the lost that they are not searching for an unknown god, but the known God, and I would love to introduce them to Him.
