It can be stopped if we live this passage.
Love your enemies. Bless them that curse you. Do good for them. Pray for them, even as they curse and persecute you.
Yes, it is difficult. Yes, it goes against human nature.
It might save the world and the souls of others if we behave as Jesus Christ says to.
