“And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.”
John 2:16
Did you buy your large latte at church this week? A granola bar? A t-shirt with the church logo on it?
Many modern churches have coffee shops and merchandise in them. They do this to “raise funds” for the church and other programs. While I appreciate their goals, it is anti-Biblical.
We are supposed to give tithes and offerings to the church, not hit up the gift shop.
There is nothing inherently wrong with serving coffee and snacks, but they should be given away for free at the expense of the church. The money a person spends at the shop should be placed in the offering plate as it passes by.
Furthermore, selling a particular brand of coffee or snack makes the church complicit in whatever secular funding that company is engaged in.
Does your church sell Starbucks coffee? Then they are funding abortion, because Starbucks is a large donor to Planned Parenthood.
You should be able to see how this is problematic.
If you attend a church with a coffee shop, you might want to consider speaking with someone about this verse.
We need to remember that a Biblical church is a house of worship, not merch.
