We Have Not Returned

“I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord. I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.”
‭‭Amos‬ ‭4:10-11‬

This is another passage written for the Jews that could be said of Americans.

We are suffering under COVID-19, and many are fearful of their mortality. We are losing friends and family to violence – both overseas and here at home. We are losing jobs and some businesses are gone forever. We have civil unrest unparalleled in this country since the 1960s.

Yet we have not returned to the Lord.

We are losing our standing on the world stage, our economy is weakening, and fires rage across the land.

Yet we have not returned to the Lord.

We are one terrorist attack, one political assassination, one mass shooting, one economic policy, one election away from collapse. The USA has never been more fragile.

Yet we have not returned to the Lord.

Our churches are not overflowing with sinners looking for a port in the storm. Our churches in some states are forced to be closed or at extremely limited capacity. Our outreach programs have stalled. Our pews remain empty.

Yet we have not returned to the Lord.

It is only a matter of time before this nation goes the way of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Time is running out for all of us. Will you return to the Lord?
